The small firm, self‐employed syndrome must be recognised as one of the key areas requiring an entirely new approach in the next stage of industrial/economic development. A new side to the production economy, producing custom‐built artefacts for highly specialised purposes, will require small entrepreneurial units, highly adaptable and sensitive to changing demand, with the key figure the technician‐manager. An examination of the MSC Enterprise Scheme in Britain shows the government to be oversimplifying the business world for young people and not fully considering how best to deploy the labour force.
