Ostensibly about training for the retail trade, this article deals with a realistic approach to the training problems faced by anyone working in the small firm situation — in even the biggest retail chain each individual shop can be regarded as a small business in its own right. It embraces the problem of how to implement the participative approach which secures the willing involvement of the learner. It is, therefore, a case study in how to secure involvement by the implementation of the most up‐to‐date principles cut down to a shape and size suitable for the small firm environment.
