Government initiatives and the drive for greater efficiency and best practice mean that much of the NHS is facing change and upheaval. Consequently, many employees feel unsettled, insecure and unsure of the future and how they can continue to develop their career. To try and address some of these feelings, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland Education and Training Consortium developed an innovative career management solution to help their staff feel more comfortable with change. Developed in partnership with Coutts Consulting Group, this article outlines how the consortium came about, identifies the issues to be addressed by the career management programme, how the programme was developed and rolled out and the outcomes for the participating trusts.
