To provide a summary of self‐help texts and ideas drawn from a range of self‐help and “how to” books.

Design/methodology/approach

Material subdivided into the ten most common (agreed) ideas for self‐improvement.

Findings

The advice is sound (common sense?) but applying it is not easy.

Research limitations/implications

The material used is often subjective and anecdotal.

Practical implications

If readers apply the principles they will experience direct benefits.

Originality/value

That there is a consistency of advice from all sorts of sources as to how to be more effective, whatever the task that confronts one.
