The purpose of this paper is to examine the balance of internal training programmes and how to get the best out of them.

The paper is based on the practical experience of the author.

Findings

Training should be bite‐sized and incorporate real situations, coaching and feedback.

Originality/value

The paper provides new thoughts and distinctions around the internal training arena and is suitable for training managers and directors of organisations.
