New employment law qualification

Keywords Employment law, Human resource management

Employers will need expert legal advice to keep them on the right side of the law as new legislation on working time, the minimum wage and data protection comes into force, says the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD).

To ease the pressure, the IPD and JSB Training and Consulting have developed a new Advanced Certificate in employment law for people management and employee relations professionals as well as lawyers and trade union officers.

The Advanced Certificate in Employment Law is a flexible, 13-day, modular programme designed to help delegates guide their organizations through the potential minefield of recent legal changes.

"There are unprecedented challenges in today's workplace with a government committed to changing working practices and UK law increasingly influenced by Europe", says Caroline Curtis,IPD business development manager.

"The Advanced Certificate provides a hands-on knowledge of employment law so that students can give the best practical advice to their employees", she continues.

The Advanced Certificate enables students to:

  • apply employment law practically in the workplace;

  • represent the organization in tribunal proceedings;

  • explain the influence of the European Union on employment law;

  • understand the use of employment law to deliver organizational goals.

"The programme is extremely flexible, so the separate modules can be done in any order and at any time to suit the individual concerned", says Paul Secher, managing director of JSB. "It can be completed in a minimum of seven or eight months or a maximum of two years."

The certificate features modules on employment contracts, practical maternity law, employment tribunals,discipline and dismissal, health and safety, business transfers and trade unions. Students must attend a total of 13 days' training, write a 3,000 word assignment and pass the IPD's national employment law examination.

"The advantage of the Advanced Certificate is that it is delivered by leading authorities in the field of employment law", says Professor Robert Upex, Head of the IPD/JSB Employment Law Faculty and a Professor of Law at Kingston University. Course tutors are barristers, solicitors and academics specializing in employment law and every student is assigned a personal tutor to advise them throughout the course.

The Advanced Certificate in Employment Law runs throughout the year and training days are held in London. Further details are available on the IPD Training Hotline on 0181 263 3434 or on the IPD website on http://www.ipd.co.uk
