The Civil Service College in the UK has launched a new development programme built on the traditional idea of the development centre, but designed better to assist the acquisition of skills and their transfer to the workplace.
The Studio Series, aimed at middle and senior managers, aims to help participants develop skills that will further both personal and corporate objectives.
Through a series of events, including assessment, workshops and a conference, participants work on diagnosis of development need, action planning, skills development and the effective transfer of skills to the workplace. Tutors are on hand to provide guidance and counselling, although all development decisions are made by participants.
Programme director, Julian Rizzello, explained: "We designed this programme to benefit both participant and sponsor. Too often, development centre work helps diagnose skill needs without providing solutions we think that has limited value. This programme is about tangible benefits in the workplace as well as personal development."
Typically, the Studio Series will take place over a period of between six and nine months, and will involve around ten days' activity. The programme can be tailored to suit individual organizational needs and is also run as an open programme.
