The Open University is offering an innovative course for those wishing to explore the intriguing basis of mathematics especially those who have had unhappy experiences of the subject previously and have only basic skills. The course is proving a great success.
The Open University (OU) one-year distance learning course, MU120, Open Mathematics, focuses on maths in the everyday world, giving a mathematical perspective to matters of general interest such as health, music, day-to-day economics, the arts and the natural world.
"To many people maths is perceived as dull, difficult and irrelevant",says OU Course Manager, Gaynor Arrowsmith, "but they might think differently when they realize how much the subject touches their lives. The underlying principle of the MU120 course is putting mathematics into context, making it much more humanized and user-friendly. It is about the relationship between mathematics and the world."
It is this practical application of maths, and the learning tools that the course includes, which is making MU120 so popular even for those who fared badly with the subject at school.
Developed for people with only relatively basic literacy and numeracy skills,the course, says the OU, is the ideal entry point for this fascinating subject,building confidence in mathematics and helping people to incorporate mathematical thinking into their everyday lives.
