Revised code of practice and guidance on lift truck operator training

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that there are about 8,000 lift truck accidents resulting in injury each year and on average about ten of them fatal. About 30 per cent of these accidents can be attributed to inadequate training.
The situation has improved over the ten years since the original Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) and guidance was published, in spite of a threefold increase in the number of lift truck operators. However, the number of accidents is still high. In view of this, and changes in legislation, the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) has published a revised version of the ACoP and guidance, Rider-operated Lift Trucks: Operator Training, to advise employers on the sort of training they should provide for lift truck operators.
It advises employers how to:
decide what training is required and who needs training;
select people for training as operators;
choose a training provider;
know what to look for in the training environment;
choose the right courses;
provide appropriate training for managers and supervisors; and
authorize operators.
