The Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD) has been granted chartered status by the Privy Council. Geoff Armstrong, Director General of the IPD,commenting on the decision, said: "I am delighted that the IPD's bid to become a chartered body has been successful. Becoming a chartered institute has long been a strategic objective for the IPD and its predecessors. Particular thanks are due to all those involved in helping the IPD become the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Council, Committee and Branch members have worked hard for this outcome, and of course members voted overwhelmingly in support last autumn."
He continued: "Chartered status means so much to our members. It recognises the fact that the IPD is in the premier league of professional institutes. It recognises that people management and development is a distinctive, systematically learnable body of knowledge, understanding and competence which adds value to organisations large and small, and which is for application by all business managers. It recognises the standards of professionalism to which members commit themselves. And it will add weight to our contribution to professional practice, policy and the public benefit."
He added: "As the UK and Ireland develop into knowledge economies, people issues are becoming ever more important. The CIPD will play the leading role in defining what those issues are, how they should be addressed and how organisations, managers and other decision makers can develop people as the primary sustainable source of competitive advantage."
