Keywords: Interlibrary lending, Document delivery
The EASY (Electronic Article SupplY) project, financed by JISC, aims to make available UK document delivery from electronic sources as a supplement to traditional interlibrary loans. The principle is that for a fee comparable to the going rate for interlibrary loans, articles in digitised form are delivered to the end-user's desktop. The main advantages of the service are:
improved article delivery time;
no signatures required for copyright declarations;
articles can be retained in digitised form on the end-user's desktop (for personal use only).
The service is provided by ingenta and Lancaster University, using Lancaster's ILLOS inter-library loans system, interfacing with ingenta's database. Publishers are co-operating in the experiment, which is designed to produce a win-win situation. Libraries gain electronic access/delivery, while publishers gain a modest income which they do not receive via conventional interlibrary loans.
Initially, EASY will be restricted to ILLOS sites but, subject to funding being available, an ILLOS-EASY applications server for non-ILLOS sites will be set up at Lancaster University.
