This study aims to examine trends and annual publications in post-disaster housing research, identify influential journals, authors and countries and explore geospatial contributions, frequently cited papers and co-occurring keywords in the field.
This study provides a comprehensive exploration of the post-disaster housing research field through a bibliometric analysis and scientometric analysis of 276 publications published between 2007 and 2024, sourced from the Scopus database.
The study highlights current trends and influential journals in post-disaster housing research. Gonzalo Lizarralde from Université de Montréal is the most prolific author, while the USA, Australia and the UK are the most active contributors. The most cited study in this domain is Davidson et al. (2007). Key recurring keywords include “post-disaster housing and reconstruction”, “recovery and resilience” and “temporary and transitional housing”.
The analysis is limited to Scopus-indexed publications, potentially excluding relevant studies from other sources. Findings suggest that incorporating resilience and participatory design theories can address immediate and long-term housing needs post-disaster, considering economic, environmental, social and cultural factors.
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study presents the first bibliometric analysis of prior research on post-disaster housing. It significantly advances the existing body of knowledge in the post-disaster housing research domain. Notably, the study highlights a gap in the literature regarding the “cultural and contextual adaptation”, “technological innovations in reconstruction” and “economic viability and affordability” aspects of post-disaster housing, emphasising the need for further exploration in this area. This study focuses on housing responses to natural hazards such as floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and landslides, excluding conflict-induced displacement.
