There are several ways to connect to a library catalog on the Internet. Telneting to its Internet Protocol address has been the traditional and is probably still the most popular method. Most recently libraries are providing links to their catalogs via their home pages. This article discusses the online directories, which not only list the available catalogs but will also make the actual telnet connection to the catalog. The two directories are Hytelnet and Libgopher. Both directories have extensive listings and connections to catalogs. Hytelnet is also a good resource for statistics on the online public access catalogs (OPACs), while Libgopher provides a keyword search capability.
