Purpose

The term work–life balance (WLB) is becoming more prevalent in both academia and business. This study aims to investigate WLB and evaluate potential failures identified by the failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) about the WLB in the Indian health-care sector. The study also identifies the failure mode associated with each antecedent of WLB of health-care workers along with the potential effects, causes and control measures, and thus offers valuable insights to enhance the productivity of health-care workers.

Design/methodology/approach

Qualitative analysis tools such as FMEA and Pareto chart are used to examine antecedents of WLB of health-care workers in the current study.

Findings

The study unravels critical areas that impact health-care workers in India. Factors such as detection, occurrence and severity of WLB provide key insights into risks, such as inadequate staffing and long working hours. Immediate interventions are essential for prioritizing these issues for organizational improvement. Corrective actions from FMEA prioritize failures, thereby guiding health-care organizations to mitigate risk and enhance productivity. Addressing these challenges fosters professional well-being and results in effective health-care delivery systems.

Research limitations/implications

The results from the FMEA approach can help enhance the efficiency of health-care delivery systems. They offer a valuable resource not just for health-care professionals but also for organizations committed to fostering WLB to promote employee growth and productivity.

Originality/value

The current study suggests several corrective interventions to mitigate risks arising from these failure modes by implementing a novel approach not previously explored in the context of Indian health-care workers. Overall, the findings of the present study might help improve health-care workers’ well-being significantly while assisting organizations in managing such challenges. Expectedly, the identification and prioritization of factors impacting WLB will enhance the overall organizational support system.
