This study aims to explore the natural alignment between the Quran verses and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDGs) targets. Its purpose is to present role of Quranic teachings for sustainable development.
The research is based on systematic thematic and sentiment analysis of 123 distinct Quranic verses. 17 UN-SDGs targets are aligned with single or multiple selected verses. The 5Ps framework (People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership) and sentiment analysis approach is used to understand the motivational tone and developmental relevance of the Quran.
The study reveals a strong thematic alignment between Quranic teachings and UN-SDGs targets. Over 90% of the verses convey a positive, action-oriented sentiment. Also, core values such as justice, social equity, compassion and stewardship are found appearing consistently signifying potential of Quranic teachings to provide an ethical foundation for sustainability development. However, this study can be used for awareness of similarities between divine guidance and secular policies.
This study focuses solely on Quranic verses and does not include hadith literature or comparative theological analysis.
This study provides a framework for Muslim educators, policymakers and community leaders to promote sustainable development through Quranic teachings.
This study fosters intercultural dialogue, ethical pluralism and deeper community alignment with UN-SDGs.
This research makes a novel, interdisciplinary contribution by integrating Quranic ethical philosophy with global sustainability goals. This study highlights the transformative potential of faith-based engagement for SDGs through strong alignment of Quranic verses and SDGs targets.
