Purpose

To develop a model that predicts the outcomes of having a called individual in innovation teams.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper draws on work as calling, peer effects and innovation literature to predict the outcomes of callings in innovation teams.

Findings

Having a called individual in a team can elicit positive, negative or zero innovation-related outcomes depending on team members’ self-efficacy and self-esteem.

Originality/value

Research on work as a calling has recently shifted to focus on a relational perspective that not only emphasizes called individuals but also those interacting with them. This study contributes to this nascent, growing body of literature by proposing potential outcomes of having a called individual in innovation teams.
