Purpose

This study explores the impact of knowledge of waqf on individual performance through intellectual capital. Furthermore, it investigates the moderating role of religiosity in the relationship between intellectual capital and individual performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The sample framework consisted of 163 students from Islamic higher education institutions who had participated in the waqfraiser program in Indonesia. The hypothesized relationship was tested using the Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach.

Findings

This study found a positive and significant influence of knowledge of waqf on individual performance. In addition, intellectual capital partially mediates the relationship between knowledge of waqf and individual performance. Religiosity was unable to moderate the relationship between intellectual capital and individual performance.

Practical implications

These findings reinforce the view that Islamic higher education institutions play an essential role in developing intellectual capital that supports the sustainability of human resource performance in the Islamic philanthropy sector, particularly in the field of waqf.

Originality/value

This research is original as it is the first to investigate how Islamic higher education institutions contribute to developing human resources in the field of waqf, specifically by analyzing the impact of waqf knowledge on individual performance, the mediating role of intellectual capital and the moderating effect of religiosity.
