Purpose

The aim of this study is to examine the significance of the human factors (HFs) in the logistics systems of organ transplantation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used an exploratory qualitative approach, conducting in-depth interviews with system operators and managers. Through content analysis, this research revealed key bottlenecks across three phases of the logistics system: production, transportation and allocation.

Findings

This study emphasizes the importance of the human element in system design, demonstrating that successful transplantation relies heavily on a human-centered approach. This includes considering the needs of families, providing appropriate professional training, ensuring efficient management and fostering effective communication among stakeholders. While physical and digital infrastructure are important, this study underscores the crucial role that HFs play in achieving successful transplantation outcomes.

Research limitations/implications

Participants’ initial reluctance to take part in the study. However, this was addressed by clearly explaining the research goals and ensuring the confidentiality of their information. Participants were reassured that their data would be used solely for research purposes. Another limitation is the challenge of incorporating documents such as norms and regulations to analyze the model’s design based on criteria such as legal constraints on regionalization, training prerequisites for system entry and intra-hospital team structure, technology allocation for team communication and the implementation of goals and performance management, among other factors.

Practical implications

This study offers valuable insights for public policy, advocating for human-centered approaches in health-care logistics.

Social implications

By highlighting the importance of HFs in transplantation, this study can influence public attitudes toward organ donation and increase support for transplantation initiatives.

Originality/value

This study enhances the understanding of the challenges faced by the organ transplantation logistics system, emphasizing the strategic role of human-centered design.
