Kodak Professional has slashed the price of its new, faster multiformat RFS 3570 Plus rapid film scanner. The new model, which can cut scanning times by up to 75 per cent, has a basic price tag of just £5,995 - a £1,000 reduction on the cost of the old RFS 3570 machine. The new 3570 Plus offers fast digitisation of colour or black-and-white film, positives and negatives in 35mm, 46mm, 70mm and 120 formats and provides outstanding productivity, as well as excellent image quality, reliability and scan-to-scan consistency. Featuring a new, improved light source that requires neither a colour filter wheel nor an infra red (IR)filter, the Kodak Professional 3570 Plus can handle a full-frame 18MB image in less than 20 seconds. New optics and charged-coupled device (CCD) technology improve scan quality by reducing flare and providing enhanced colour sharpness and saturation. A total of 12-bits per channel colour delivers outstanding accuracy and image detail, and a flexible configuration means that the 3570 Plus can deliver scans up to a 2K x 3K resolution. Capable of scanning colour or black-and-white film, positives and negatives, in 35mm, 46mm, 70mm and 120 formats, the versatile 3570 Plus comes with holders for 35mm mounted or strip films and 120 format film (for 6 x 7cm, 6 x 6cm). Optional holders are available for a variety of other film sizes and the 3570 Plus also uses existing 3570 scanner film gates. The scanner also features automatic colour correction to optimise first-time scans for colour balance, density and contrast. Users can specify input resolution up to 2,000dpi and an improved software interface allows operators to master the features of the scanner with minimal training. The 3570 Plus scanner takes advantage of increased computer processing power by moving image processing to the host. A faster motherboard exports 12-bit data directly to the host computer and - depending on the speed of the host computer- scanning times can be cut by up to 75 per cent. Kodak's new scanner ships with an Adobe Photoshop Acquire Module for Macintosh computers and a TWAIN data source for Windows. A Kodak ColorFlow Image Acquire software utility allows operators to use plug-ins compliant with Photoshop that automatically acquire and save images from the 3570 Plus into a variety of colour spaces such as CMYK. In addition, users can quickly batch acquired images without opening Photoshop and manually save each image into a variety of colour spaces. A software developer kit (SDK) is available for third-party developers who want to use the scanner in markets such as advertising and corporate in-house, or in situations requiring custom integration drivers. Minimum system requirements for Macintosh users are: a 200MHz Power Macintosh, OS 8.0 or higher, 125MB DRAM and 200 MB of available hard disk space. For PC users, a 200 MHz PC-compatible computer,running Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 operating systems, 125MB DRAM and 200MB of available hard disk space is required.
