The next one

I was reading a piece in the press in which scientists were asked to make predictions for "the next great scientific breakthrough". There were a number of suggestions (many relating to genetic research, to life outside of our solar system and to further development of computers and related technologies) but the reply that seemed most appropriate was one that suggested that if we could predict the next big breakthrough, then it was not a big breakthrough. The really important developments are not predictable.
