Reports the results of a study of the Tanzanian textile industry,and draws conclusions which are likely to be applicable to other industries in Tanzania and to other developing countries. Initially the authors were seeking to apply modern manufacturing management techniques such as manufacture resource planning and just‐in‐time to this industry,possibly with some simplifications or adaptations. However, it became apparent that the Tanzanian textile industry faces fundamental commercial and managerial problems, many of which start from the political background.
