With four department stores Bijenkorf is one of the most important retail groups in the Netherlands. In mid‐1970 Kurt Salmon Associates were asked by the Bijenkorf management to look into their physical distribution operation, and in particular into the possibility of a service centre for handling big ticket merchandise. Three years from the first investigation and according to schedule, the big ticket service centre opened at Woerden, near Utrecht. This article describes the planning and the centre itself.
