Managers with insight, flexibility and drive are essential if the future of retailing is going to be anything more than a grim treading water in the years of slow economic recovery ahead. This was the solemn message contained in the keynote speech at the first Retail Europe conference, held in Amsterdam at the end of February. But all was not gloom. The conference brought together leading retailers and equipment suppliers from around Europe to focus on the major technological issues of retailing in the '80s. Other speakers told of successful computer aided energy saving programmes, advice was offered on how to instill confidence in staff nervous about new technology, and pointers were given on how to avoid pitfalls when installing an EPOS system for the first time. RDM was there.
