Almost two years after Checkout, the tough and competitive nature of the grocery trade shows little sign of relenting. A recent seminar of the south‐west branch of the Institute of Grocery Distribution — called, significantly, “The Power Game; grocery market shares in 1979” — heard a strong panel of speakers agree that the price war was not going to go away and that the multiples would gain at the expense of the less efficient independents.
