This pilot study aims to identify discrepancies between professionals’ perspectives and current educational curricula in sustainability design education. By examining these disparities, the study seeks to uncover mismatches between the knowledge and skills imparted by educational programs and the expectations and requirements of professionals in the sustainability design industry. The goal is to ensure that educational programs remain relevant, responsive to industry needs and effectively prepare students for successful and impactful careers in sustainable design.
A web-based survey was conducted, targeting a panel of US consumers working in the design industry. Data was collected with a 91.3% response rate, resulting in 183 responses from 190 participants. Both quantitative and qualitative analyses were used to interpret the data.
The survey reveals that professionals prioritize potential toxicity, human-centric design and material selection as crucial elements for sustainable project implementation.
This study represents the first nationwide survey examining the different perspectives between educational curricula and industry practices in sustainability design.
