Book Express: a mini‐library for rail commuters

This paper discusses the development and operation of a new and unique public library service in Gosford, Australia. It explains that although the library had been thriving for 50 years, a mixture of causes was creating the effect of reducing loans. Details are provided as to the method the library used to target specific non‐users with a service tailored to their needs so as to increase loans. The new service is called “Book Express” and enables rail commuters to borrow material as they rush to catch their morning train. The service differs in that it is provided at 5.30 a.m. when all other libraries are closed and is physically located outside. The paper outlines in detail what is required to set the service up, the costs, how results are measured and alternative uses. Usage and publicity has been above expectation. It recommends that minimalist libraries be considered as a cost‐effective alternative to doing nothing at all.
