I was fortunate to be granted a sabbatical leave for the January‐April (1986) school term, and to be able to spend it at my university's London Study Centre. The nominal duties of looking after the Centre library allowed time to learn something about British library education and to provide me with a very limited introduction to London borough libraries. I have been interested for some years — since 1953 — in international librarianship; I am familiar in a limited way with several aspects of library service and education in our confused world.
