AN ESAB A30A arc‐welding robot installed at the Kristine‐hamn works of Saab‐Scania in Sweden has reduced by 40% the time required to produce rear axles for the Saab 900 car, and is expected to pay for itself in 24 months. By freeing skilled welders for tasks that cannot be automated, the robot has also averted an anticipated shortage of such labour if the 900 reaches its production target. Working conditions have meanwhile been vastly improved by separating welders from the fumes and spatter of the arc.
