Almost anywhere that one reads about business or the economy today, the word “PROFITABILITY” appears. Speeches, articles in newspapers and journals, books and conferences, are devoted to various aspects of profitability. Equating higher profits with increased productivity is, however, one of the most serious topics of our time, and an all‐out assault on profit and productivity improvement would seem to be worth almost any effort and cost.
