Field operations at Wang UK Limited have been revolutionised by a system which ensures that emergency requests for service and routine maintenance are effectively carried out by engineers. Customer service is recognised as an essential part of the computer industry's success. Shorter response times and higher service levels are required and can be achieved only by efficient two‐way information transfer. Wang's remote hand‐held terminals, connected to a centralised minicomputer, are focused on. The system is easy to use and has several advantages in terms of the costs, time and travel of the service engineers. Bar coding is used to log the flows of the major spare parts and will later be extended to the whole range of parts.
