Flexible cables
Flexible cables
Keywords: Cables, Robotics
No "continuous flex" cables are as durable as Lapp Cable's ÖLFLEX FD series, where automation is at an advanced level and where the stresses placed on conventional cables can cause early fatigue and failure.
Ongoing R&D has resulted in the introduction of the ÖLFLEX FD®810 series, with greatly improved bend radius to withstand continuously flexing applications. Furthermore, these new cables will last even longer: in laboratory tests they have endured 5 million continuous flexing cycles without failure (see Plate 3).

Where automatic handling equipment and robotics are in constant use, the extra flexible qualities of ÖLFLEX FD 810 enable the cables to withstand more rigorous and heavy duty operations. At each stage of construction attention has been paid to the areas where stresses could have a detrimental effect.
The cable construction includes very fine conductor stranding with a high rate of twist on the strands; and the cores are themselves cabled together on very short lay lengths. This reduces stresses at the point of bending.
Plastic fillers occupy the cable centre where stress is continuous; extra talcuming allows the cores to slide freely over each other; textile separator tapes act as reservoirs for the talc, preventing sticking to the outer sheath and minimising frictional forces; and a specially formulated PVC outer sheath holds all together. The ÖLFLEX FD 810P features a special flame retardant polyurethane based sheath, which is also hydrolysis, microbe and abrasion resistant.
