High performance OEM motion controller executes up to eight servoi/stepper programs simultaneously

Motion specialist, Naples Coombe, has introduced the Galil DMC1800-PCI, a new motion controller offering OEMs cost effective control of up to eight axes of servo or stepper in any combination (see Plate 2). Designed to install conveniently in a PCI slot, the DMC1800-PCI is compact, easy to use and powerful. It combines a 32-bit processor with multitasking software to achieve,fast, precise and highly reliable execution of upto eight application programs simultaneously.

The fully functioned DMC1800-PCI is the ideal product for modern, PC-based motion applications, where high-speed and/or high precision, motion control is critical. Such applications include semi-conductor processing, automated assembly machines, machine tools, testing and inspection machines and packaging and printing systems.

To provide flexible performance in these applications the DMC1800-PCI offers the widest range of operating possibilities with a specification that includes point-to-point positioning, jogging, linear and circular interpolation,contouring, electronic gearing and Electronic CAM (ECAM). ECAM is the ideal operating mode for periodic operation, especially in applications such as flying shears, rotating knives and packaging systems, where varying gear ratios are required along the motion cycle.

Optimising the performance of the DMC1800-PCI in all of its operating modes are supplementary facilities, such as a Dual Loop feature, which enables the controller to compensate for mechanical backlash, and extensive error handling capabilities in both hardware and software. In addition, Sinusoidal Commutation ensures both smooth motion and reduced torque ripple – when using brushless motors, and the facility for High Speed Position Capture and Compare on each axis guarantees synchronisation of position, especially when the DMC1800-PCI is used in conjunction with external equipment such as coordinate measuring machines.

In addition to its performance credentials, the DMC1800-PCI is a true OEM product in the physical sense, offering hardware and software features that save machine builders and systems engineers both time and money through ease of product integration and set-up.

Simplifying integration is comprehensive list of standard hardware features,including uncommitted analogue inputs for interface to external sensors,secondary communication FIFO for fast access to position data, and auxiliary encoder inputs for dual-loop control. Other features include programmable memory with multi-tasking, symbolic variables and arrays, uncommitted digital I/O, and high-density shielded cables to ensure noise immunity.
