New high-performance desktop robot offers large working area

Keywords: Robots, Assembly

A new high-speed, high-precision desktop robot is now available from Townsend Coates (Plate 6). The product offers a much larger working area than the other models in the range, which have proved extremely successful in applications such as screw-tightening, dispensing, soldering, resistance and laser welding.

With an L-type body structure, and an aluminium-alloy, die cast single-structure base, the new product – manufactured by Janome – is extremely compact and robust. Offering an X/Y moving range (working area)of 500 × 500 mm, the robot has high repeatability (±0.01 mm),through the use of a very precise ball screw, and is very powerful for its size, with a portable work weight of 3.5 kg (max.) for the Z-axis and 7 kg for the X/Y-axes.

With a data capacity of up to 6,000 points, and 100 programmes, the JR2500 also features a new, maintenance-free flash memory card which needs no battery. The product is supplied as standard with two serial (RS232) interfaces (one for the teaching pendant, the other for PC connection), and a third – for external I/O – is available as an option. A simple sequencer is built into the robot, and operates independently. No further hardware is necessary, because the I/O uses part of the robot's main external I/O port.

Exceptionally easy to use, the JR2500 features Janome's unique teaching and application software, supplied in memory card format. This eliminates the need for a complex programming language, and enables novice users to familiarise themselves with the robot quickly and efficiently. Another significant advantage of the new product results from its labyrinth structure, which prevents the ingress of dust, solvents and adhesives into the work tables or slide key.

With speeds up to 500 mm/s (X/Y), and 250 mm/s (Z), the JR2500 is driven by a five-phase stepping motor operating from a 90-132 Vac/180-250 Vac supply, with a current consumption of 200 VA.
