A laser welding apparatus which emits laser energy to weld blanks together along a seam line for use in industrial processing is described. The emitted laser energy comprises either a single or a multiple beam of two or more coherent light sources. The apparatus is adapted to selectively reposition the orientation on the multiple beam relative to the seam line to achieve maximum weld efficiency having regard to any gaps between the abutting portions of the workpieces to be joined or the relative thickness' of the sheet blanks to be joined.
