This paper traces the changes in the roles of both engineers and architects in bridge design. It argues that, with footbridges, because of the particular challenges these pose, both roles have come together. To illustrate this point, the paper then looks in detail at the River Po Footbridge in Turin, Italy, which was designed by a bridge team that includes both architects and engineers.
