The development of Hong Kong's new international airport at Chek Lap Kok north of Lantau Island required construction of an expressway and highspeed rail link connecting the airport with the rest of Hong Kong. This involved making a physical connection for the first time between Lantau and the Kowloon peninsula, the principal part of which is the spectacular 4 km long Lantau Link. The Link consists of three major structures: the 1377 m span Tsing Ma suspension bridge, the 430 m span Kap Shui Mun cable-stayed bridge and the Ma Wan viaduct connecting the two bridges on Ma Wan Island. All structures carry a dual three-lane expressway on the top deck and, on the lower deck, two rail tracks and twin single-lane sheltered carriageways. On completion in May 1997, the Tsing Ma bridge and Kap Shui Mun bridge are, respectively, the world's longest suspension and longest cable-stayed bridges to carry both road and rail traffic.
