HONG KONG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT RAILWAY.

Hong Kong's new 34 km airport railway opened in June 1998 after a construction period of just 43 months. The HK$44 billion project links the new international airport at Chek Lap Kok and the rest of Hong Kong as well as giving essential relief to the existing mass transit railway system. The new railway comprises 8 km of tunnels, 6 km of elevated structures and 20 km of at-grade track. It serves four stations—Hong Kong, Kowloon, Tsing Yi and Chek Lap Kok—and is one of the first railways in the world to be purpose-built from the outset to serve a new airport. It has in-town check-in facilities at the two main urban stations and extensive transport interchanges at each station. The all-seated business class service to the airport takes only 23 minutes from Hong Kong Central and reaches speeds of up to 135 km/h.
