The world's largest users of inland navigation are China, Europe and the USA. Inland water transport exists in other markets, but generally waterways are underutilised compared to other modes. This paper outlines the various groups involved in inland navigation – including barge operators, shippers, infrastructure providers and ports – and their relationships. It then discusses the future of inland waterways and how information, infrastructure and institutions can improve waterway operations.
