The role and competence of temporary works coordinators is not clearly defined in BS 5975. Frank Marples of Vinci Construction sets out to provide a definition and, while recognising that some engineering knowledge is necessary, shows it is not essential that the appointed individual is a chartered civil engineer – technician engineers can be just as effective.
