Dismantling steel cantilever truss bridges is a complex operation that requires significant engineering to produce safe and effective dismantling sequences. Such sequences often include a variety of temporary works, including temporary truss members, temporary support towers, tension-release devices and temporary attachments for heavy-lift components. This paper provides a review of the design and analysis considerations for developing a dismantling sequence for cantilever steel truss bridges and the design of the required temporary works, with three examples from the USA.
