The growth of macro-algae in most marine structures is a common phenomenon. Even though it causes secondary deterioration, its significance is often underestimated. Puducherry, India is a coastal region where the growth of Ulva fasciata (Delile) is abundant on all marine structures. To ascertain the detrimental effect by marine algae on coastal concrete structures, M20 grade concrete cubes were cast and kept in a coastal area where there is abundant algae growth. Collected samples were analysed by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray diffraction to establish the degree of deterioration caused by marine algae on concrete surfaces. The results showed that the marine algae has a substantial detrimental effect on the concrete surface.
