Papers published in Construction Materials are eligible for awards from the Institution of Civil Engineers. Papers from any of the ICE journals can be nominated for several awards. In addition, each journal has awards dedicated to their specific subject area.
On Friday 9 October 2015, ICE president David Balmforth presented an award to the following paper published in Construction Materials in 2014. The editorial panel nominated their best papers and an awards committee chaired by Quentin Leiper allocated the awards.
Thomas Howard Medal
The Thomas Howard Medal, presented for the best paper on any of the uses or properties of iron, steel or material development, was awarded to Kaur et al. (2014).
Abstract
The paper presents the ongoing experimental work on flexural behaviour of steel fibre reinforced concrete containing cement additions such as fly ash, limestone powder, silica fume and metakaolin, added in binary and ternary blends. The mechanical properties, namely, compressive strength, flexural strength and flexural toughness were evaluated for all mix combinations. The flexural toughness parameters were determined for comparative evaluation of different concrete mixes by different methods viz. ASTM C1018, Japanese Concrete Institute (JCI) method, ASTM C 1609/C 1609M, post crack strength method. The results have witnessed the enhanced toughness performance of metakaolin based concretes as compared to silica fume based concretes. Additionally, preliminary results examining the probability distributions of fatigue life of limestone powder based mixes have also been presented at the end.1
