This paper presents an investigation of the evaluation of the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of cement-stabilised Shanghai clay by hardness testing. Laboratory tests including the hardness test and the unconfined compression test were carried out. An innovative decision was taken to use the Shore-A durometer to measure the hardness of cement-stabilised clay. Based on the regression analysis of laboratory test results, an exponential equation is proposed to express the unique relationship between the UCS and the degree of hardness. By measuring the hardness of jet grout columns installed in Shanghai clay, the proposed exponential equation was applied as a trial for predicting their UCS. Comparison results suggested that the exponential equation proposed in this study may be used to produce a quick prediction of the UCS by measuring the hardness of samples in the field.
