Welcome to the latest issue of the Dams and Reservoir Journal and the last of 2017.
We would like to remind our readers that we welcome comment and discussion on our published papers. If you would like to provide any discussion on the papers included in this issue, or previous issues, please email the editor.
We are currently looking for articles for our 2018 editions. Please could I request that our readership continue to highlight topics and schemes that they think would be of interest to the wider readership and contact the editor with a proposed title or subject in the first instance. Please note that our editorial panel are on hand to provide mentoring and guidance in preparation of papers, should you require.
At times we receive interesting papers, which we would like to publish, but due to their length or complexity are not suitable for publishing in the hard copy of our Journal. In these instances the papers are still available on line for readers to peruse. In this issue we have a paper by Ezzeldin Yazeed Sayed-Ahmed, entitled Concrete Dams: Thermal-Stress and Construction Stages Analysis. A short abstract for this paper is given below:
During the process of concrete hardening, temperature profiles show gradual nonlinear distributions and at early ages, this distribution can have an influence on crack evolution, especially in mass concrete such as that used in gravity dams. Coupled thermal-stress finite element analysis, which also considers the stages of construction, was performed on a concrete gravity dam to determine the impact of changing the time intervals in concrete placing on the thermal/stress response of the dam.
Risk Assessment for Reservoir Safety
Please note that the online version of RARS (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/guide-to-risk-assessment-for-reservoir-safety-management) has now been updated (June 2017) to include the amendment in the addendum issued in 2014, plus some further corrections and clarifications incorporated in 2017. Readers are encouraged to make sure they use the latest version of RARS.
Competitions
The BDS Prize competition is running this year. This encourages young members to write a paper on a dam related subject. The finalists will present their papers at the ICE on the 20th November. The winner will be announced that evening.
The photo competition is also now open to entries. Please see the BDS website for information on how to enter.
Upcoming events
A full calendar of future events and meetings is provided on the BDS website, which is kept updated with any changes to the publicised events calendar. The website also includes a web link to those events held at the ICE London and a facility to ‘listen again’ to some of the previous presentations.
The 2018 British Dam Society conference will be held at the University of Swansea from Thursday 13th September to Saturday 15th September. The organisers have issued a call for papers on the theme of Smart Dams and Reservoirs. Further details can be found on the British Dam Society website.
The third iteration of the international ‘Protections 2018’ conference will be taking place in the Lake District, UK, in June 2018 and is expected to cover many areas of interest to BDS members related to the overflowing and wave overtopping of embankments of all kinds. The call for papers, and more information about the event is available here: www.protections2018.org.
