British Waterways' portfolio of old dams is described and contemporary valve layouts are discussed. The risks associated with such layouts are reviewed as are recent recommendations by inspecting engineers for mitigating these risks. British Waterways' emergency drawdown policy is stated and three recent examples of pipelining are described. Finally, lessons learnt by British Waterways from the Boltby and Ulley incidents are summarised.
