This paper describes some geotechnical aspects associated with a number of dams in the North West of England. It covers the period from the early canal dams built at the turn of the nineteenth century through the development of Pennine dam design and construction methods employed by eminent engineers of the time such as John Fredrick La Trobe Bateman, Thomas Hawksley and James Diggle.
