Welcome to the third issue of the 29th volume of Dams and Reservoirs.
This issue follows on from the Binnie lecture in the last issue, with a paper covering initial reflections on the failure of the Brumadinho dam.
We would like to remind our readers that we welcome comment and discussion on our published papers. If you would like to provide any discussion on the papers included in this issue, or previous issues, please email the editor.
We are currently looking for articles for our 2019 editions. Please could I request that our readership continue to highlight topics and schemes that they think would be of interest to the wider readership and contact the editor with a proposed title or subject in the first instance. Please note that our editorial panel are on hand to provide mentoring and guidance in preparation of papers, should you require.
We would also be interested in our readership highlighting topics that they feel would make a worthwhile ‘special issue’.
The deadlines to receive articles, including technical papers, discussion pieces and case studies for the 30th volume of the Journal are as follows.
Issue 1: 30th October 2019
Issue 2: 15th January 2020
Issue 3: 30th April 2020
Issue 4: 31st August 2020
At times we receive interesting papers, which we would like to publish, but due to their length or complexity are not suitable for publishing in the hard copy of our Journal. In these instances the papers are still available online for readers to peruse. Please also note that articles are available online in advance of being published in the hard copy of our Journal, so it is always a good idea to check the Journal online to keep up to date with recent developments in our industry (https://www.icevirtuallibrary.com/toc/jdare/0/0).
Honorary member of ICOLD
‘The BDS wish to congratulate Dr Malcolm Dunstan who became an honorary member of ICOLD at the annual meeting in Ottawa in June. This is in recognition of his significant contribution to dam engineering through his work on roller compacted concrete dams throughout the world. Well done Malcolm!’
Denis Earp
We regret to inform our membership that Denis Earp has recently passed away. Denis was one of the UK's longest serving and most prolific panel engineers, undertaking 330 reservoir inspections during 30 years of continuous appointment to the panel. In the 1980s he inspected every single reservoir owned at that time by the predecessor of Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.

We recently published an interview with Dennis (Pether, 2018) which we encourage our readership to revisit.

Toddbrook Reservoir incident
I am sure that all of our members were shocked by the incident that occurred at Toddbrook Reservoir near Whaley Bridge in August 2019 which led to the evacuation of the village. There will of course be an investigation into the events leading to the incident and it would be wrong to speculate on the causes at this stage. The BDS will ensure that there are good opportunities for members to debate the issues and learn from the lessons in due course.
