Systemic UNSDG in construction industry challenges and transformation

The construction industry, as a major consumer of natural resources, occupies a critical position in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). However, its engagement with these objectives often appears superficial, constrained by macro-level challenges and systemic barriers. This paper underscores the necessity for a transition towards a cohesive and holistic framework to more effectively address the complexities of sustainability. Current practices within the sector frequently approach the goals in isolation, failing to fully recognise their interconnected and interdependent nature. This paper advocates for a systemic perspective, built on three core principles: generating value, continuously assessing collective progress, and engaging reflectively in the aggregation of sustainability efforts. These principles highlight the need for adaptive and integrative strategies across the construction sector. Moreover, the paper identifies significant barriers embedded within business practices that must be addressed to enable this transition. By adopting a more systemic and reflective approach, the construction sector can align more effectively with global sustainability imperatives and make meaningful contributions to the UNSDGs. Such a shift not only advances sustainable development but also repositions the industry as a transformative force in achieving long-term global goals.
