This paper catalogues a range of types of damage that water can make to the built environment. Coverage is broad but without detail, so that a document in the form of an aide-memoire is presented. Practitioners will recognise many of the effects noted, but it is thought likely that at least some forms of damage or risk will come as a useful reminder or new insight. Where experts can extend the list of effects and case studies, this is welcomed. The author’s aim is that, by reminding or alerting practitioners to a wide range of causes of damage from water, this paper will inspire reflection, interest and further investigation into the subject so that few if any causes of damage from water are inadvertently omitted from design risk assessment or from consideration by those investigating problems. The assistance of the members of SCOSS, the UK’s Standing Committee on Structural Safety, is acknowledged.
