Welcome to our July special edition “Innovations in Deep Foundations: Design and Construction”. This is truly a bumper issue at over one hundred pages and a total of twelve papers. The success of our call for papers on this topic exceeded our expectations and prompted us to delay the publication of this special issue to allow time to develop as many as possible of the submitted papers through to publication. There are a number of papers which have not made this special issue but will nonetheless appear in forthcoming editions once they have cleared the publication process.

The range of papers is broad, covering case histories, field measurements, construction and design methodology. It is hoped that this will stimulate written discussion which the advisory committee actively encourages. I should like to thank all of the authors, referees and members of the advisory panel, both in the UK and overseas, for their hard work in producing and reviewing the material received.

The advisory panel considers that the success of the special interest edition initiative conceived in 2002–3 is well worth continuing with on a biennial basis. In this context the panel encourages readers to e-mail in any suggested topics for forthcoming special issues for our consideration at our next meeting in July.

Finally, it just leaves me to wish you all happy reading.
